Where a safe space   is possible

The project is located in the outdoor patio of the Frederic Marès Museum in Barcelona. It envisions an urban sanctuary where humans and birds coexist in harmony. By integrating nature, sound, and design, the space fosters well-being and offers a refuge within the city. Research will focus on attracting diverse bird species and ensuring a continuous presence of birdsong, with piano music filling the space when birds rest. The goal is to create a safe, immersive environment where visitors feel grounded and connected to nature, even amid the city’s chaos.

Clean water for drinking and bathing is essential for attracting birds. They use the ponds to socialize, stay clean, and hydrate, which is why a large pond has been created along the patio specifically for them.

Birds prioritize finding a secure place to rest and search for a peaceful area to build their shelters. These shelters are designed to house small birds, providing an ideal size to protect them from predators.

Eventually, bird feeders will be installed inside the houses, allowing the birds to eat in peace and preventing other animals from stealing their food.

Many individuals are unaware of why they are drawn to nature. Neuroscientific research demonstrates how the built environment influences human behaviour, cognition, and overall well-being. Neurourbanism integrates principles from neuroscience and urban planning to design spaces that promote human health and facilitate recovery from urban stress.

Spending time in the forest and practicing grounding strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, and enhances mood. Simply being near trees fosters a sense of safety. Have you heard the saying that hugging a tree feels like hugging yourself?

Grounding

Birdsong has a calming effect on humans, helping to reduce anxiety, depression, and paranoia. Research suggests that our connection to birdsong stems from its association with safety—when birds go silent, it often signals the presence of danger.

Listening to classical piano music can promote mindfulness, relieve stress, and reduce anxiety by triggering the release of dopamine, the body’s natural “happy” chemical that enhances mood
